Teaching and enabling students how to ask questions in the class

Available in:

English, Tamil

Recommended age:

13+

Description:

Making students ask questions in the class is always challenging. Though teachers promote this practice, the success rate of sustaining the practice is not much encouraging. In this webinar, we use the Question Formulation Technique a tested tool developed by the Right Question Institute (RQI, www.rightquestion.org). The objective of the webinar is to introduce thinking concepts involved in asking questions and more importantly practice the technique so that they can initiate, improve their questioning skills not only in the classroom but also in real life. By participating in the webinar, students will be able to 1. Recognize the importance of asking their own questions in any learning environment, not only inside the classroom but also outside the classroom settings 2. Understand the thinking skills required for asking questions that help students increase their engagement in the class and enhance deeper learning 3. Continuously practice and improve the question-asking aptitude to take ownership of learning and demonstrate greater comprehension of subject understanding.

A walk on the moon

Available in:

English, Greek

Recommended age:

10+

Description:

Would it be possible to live on the moon? How would that look like? In this webinar, Kosmas Gazeas describes the characteristics of the surface of the moon, explains the limitations of our understanding of it and helps us imagine how it would be to live there for longer periods of time.

Applications of Linear Algebra

Available in:

English

Recommended age:

12+

Description:

This webinar will base on applications of linear algebra to the scientific world. Linear algebra is the backbone of mathematics where other branches of mathematics depend on. It consists of major titles (matrices, vectors, mapping, and linear systems) that have the wildest applications in other disciplines.

Biomedical Engineering - Biomechanics

Available in:

English, Russian

Recommended age:

15+

Description:

In this webinar I will provide an overview of what biomedical engineering and its applications from industry to research. The focus will be on Biomechanics which what I have better expertise on, but will also include applications involving Machine Learning & AI which is an area of growing interest.

What are chaotic systems?

Available in:

English, German

Recommended age:

12+

Description:

What do weather reports, our solar system, and time travel have in common? And why is it so difficult to make accurate predictions about the future, even with the precise measurements that we can perform today? We will discuss these questions by taking a look at what makes our seemingly simple solar system inherently chaotic and learn what butterflies have to do with the difficulty of weather reports. In the end, we try to understand what chaos really is and how we can face the uncertainty it imposes.

Age of the Earth and the Sun

Available in:

English, Russian, Georgian

Recommended age:

14+

Description:

A lecture about cosmochemistry, and how studying meteorites allows us to understand the origin of the Earth.

Are humans the only ones to develop cancer?

Available in:

English, Greek

Recommended age:

11+

Description:

In this webinar I will present the enormous collection of species where we see cancer. Do all species develop cancers? Some develop lots of cancers, others develop no cancers. Some cancers even transmit from one animal to the other as a contagious disease. We will talk about how diet, the environment, and chimerism, may affect cancer rates across species. Looking forward to a great discussion!

Biotechnology: What is it and what is it for?

Available in:

English, Spanish

Recommended age:

12+

Description:

During this webinar we will learn the definition of biotechnology, important concepts such as cell, cell types, DNA, proteins; then we will learn examples of the applications of biotechnology and the hopes for the future.

A gentle walk along the beach of infinities

Available in:

English, Persian

Recommended age:

14+

Description:

What is infinity? Are there different infinities? How do they differ? and many questions of this sort will be answered in this webinar. To do so, I would like to introduce infinities starting from our intuition, then make it more precise to find the true road to infinity. I shall try to keep the technicality at the minimum, and provide examples of infinities and counter-examples to our intuition. I would expect that by the end of webinar you love infinities, if not more, as much as you love natural numbers. No preliminary is required except the ability of counting natural numbers, say 0,1,2,3,...

Agrobiodiversity: a key to building sustainable agriculture

Available in:

English, French

Recommended age:

8+

Description:

Is a fairer and more sustainable agriculture possible? An agriculture that meets the challenges of food security but also those of climate change and biodiversity erosion? Is agroecology really an option to feed the 9.8 billion people in 2050? This seminar presents the latest scientific findings on these issues and highlights the role of agrobiodiversity and family farming system in building a fair and equitable sustainable agriculture.

Behavioral Biases in Our Decision Making

Available in:

English, Russian

Recommended age:

12+

Description:

Let's discover what shortcuts and approximations - also called heuristics - our brain employs to make timely and resource-saving decisions and what mistakes we can avoid by understanding some of the behavioral/cognitive biases, fallacies and effects we are all subject to. Once we understand the mechanisms of human decision making we can start making better decisions. Learning about biases is fun and very useful! You will start observing some of the learned biases in others and (hopefully) at times in yourselves too, avoiding the Bias Blind Spot.

Choosing better: healthier ageing with AGiR! at Hackuarium

Available in:

English, French

Recommended age:

9+

Description:

The Swiss public association, AGiR! (Action for Genomic integrity through Research!) was founded more than 7 years ago in order to raise awareness about avoidable risks to health. 'Genomic integrity' is a big-picture concept meant to include all the dynamic molecular genetic details of cells. Damage to these cellular components can block their vital activities, and can result from many things we are regularly exposed to (UV, heavy metals, pesticides) or commonly choose to do (smoking, hair dyeing, drinking alcohol). Research shows how sub-cellular damage can affect health and/or speed up ageing. Luckily, we have about 100 genes to repair such damage and take care of the 20,000 genes in our cells; but prevention is better than a cure. Learn about your cells, how RNA activities can be essential for DNA repair, and furthermore about how this is also a global environmental issue. In this Zoom meeting, we will discover the magnitude of potential impacts and explore simple ways to reduce exposure to substances causing cellular damage and thus help promote healthy ageing. You will learn about 'participatory research' and 'biohacking' at Lausanne's open public laboratory, Hackuarium, where one day you may like to come participate in a guided exploration of your own cellular health. (Presentation can be adapted for audiences of any age, 9-90, and can include, potentially, an oFoldscope build...)
